The History Of Dental Implants

Dental implants, surprisingly, date all the way back to the ancient Mayans. Of course, they have come a very long way since then. Archeologists have discovered evidence that the Mayans shaped pieces of shell to look like teeth and socketed them into the jaw in place of missing incisors.

Despite this ancient innovation, it wasn’t until the 20th century that discoveries were made that enabled the modern process of dental implants. In 1952, a Swedish professor found that titanium is able to bond irreversibly to living bone tissue. As he studied this process, he realized that the bone grew in such close proximity to titanium that it basically adhered to the metal.

This discovery paved the way for an inventive implant dentist to use titanium screws to attach replacement teeth to the bone itself. Dr. Leonard Linkow began applying dental implants in 1952, and by the early 90s, he had placed more than 19,000 of them. He often is referred to as the father of implant dentistry.

When they were first introduced, dental implants generally were used to treat people who had lost all of their teeth and had difficulty stabilizing dentures because of bone loss in the jaw. Today, implants can be used to replace just a single missing tooth or a few in a row, as well.

Early implants all were the same width, but now, they come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. Their surfaces are colored and textured like natural teeth, so they look real and match people’s natural smiles.
