Wear Your Dentures With Confidence Using These Simple Tips

Posted on December 23, 2013 by Dr. Mal Braverman

It is a simple fact of life that things break down and wear out the more we use them. Our teeth are no exception. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly one-quarter of those aged 65 and over are entirely edentulous, i.e., they have no teeth. Tens of millions more are missing one or more teeth and require tooth replacement devices and prosthetics. Even though they’ve been around for over 4500 years now, dentures remain the most popular option.

While there are no official numbers, it has been estimated that between 30 and 40 million adults wear full or partial dentures each day. The number one complaint with these popular replacement systems is that they are removable and may fall out of place. In fact, a recent survey conducted by Fixodent found that both male and female denture wearers worry about their dentures dislodging in public.

To allay these concerns, prosthodontists recommend the following:

  • Purchase a pair of dentures that are right for you. Do not wear a pair if there are any gaps or ill-fitting areas.
  • Use a denture adhesive that is strong enough to keep your false teeth in place but won’t irritate your gums. You may have to test out a few different products and brands to find the right one.
  • Use the directed amount of denture adhesive cream. The application instructions may vary by product, but most adhesive recommend using three or four dabs of cream that are about the size of a chocolate chip.
