The pursuit of the perfect smile can be a long and confusing road. And when you’re considering veneers, you want to make sure you know exactly what you’re getting into.

The first question you’ll wonder about is simply… what are veneers? And with so many other options out there, how do you know if this procedure is the right one for you?

Let’s cut through the confusion, once and for all, and dive into answering what veneers are and how the procedure works.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are a thin, custom piece of porcelain or a composite material made to fit over the contour of a tooth. Once bonded onto the tooth enamel, it helps re-creates the natural color and shape of your teeth.

Think of it as being very similar to applying acrylic onto a natural fingernail.

In many situations, veneers are a less intrusive option to braces or crowns in correcting the appearance of your smile. And when the ultimate goal is to change the color, shape, or size of a tooth, it’s considered the more conservative approach.

Who Should Consider Veneers?

Veneers may be good for anyone wanting to conceal discoloration to the teeth or in closing gaps between teeth. They also help hide damage that a root canal may have caused. Or restore the smile in older patients who have experienced wear of the front teeth as they have aged.

What Is the Procedure Like?

Since most veneers need to be custom made in a dental lab, the procedure requires two office visits to complete.

During the first visit, a thin part of the natural teeth is removed while a local anesthetic ensures comfort. Then, an impression of the teeth is sent off to the lab so that veneers can be made to your exact specifications.

The second visit involves cleaning and prepping the teeth to apply the new veneers. Resin material is used to help place the veneers onto the teeth. It is then hardened into place with the help of a special curing light.

Things to Keep in Mind

When considering whether veneers may or may not be right for you, here are some things to consider:

  • Between the first and second office visit, your teeth may be sensitive to both hot and cold temperatures.
  • Veneers are not forever. At some point, they will need replaced, typically after 15 years. However, taking proper care of them will ensure they last as long as possible.
  • Care of veneers involves brushing and flossing just like you would your regular teeth. And although porcelain veneers resist staining, consider limiting the amount of coffee and other staining food to ensure the long-lasting appearance of your new veneers.

Veneers Can Help Give You That Perfect Smile

For many people, veneers are the perfect solution to getting the smile you’ve always wanted. Once you get past answering the question “What are veneers?”, you’ll feel confident in being able to make an informed decision with your doctor.
